Get the Luxury London Apartment Look at Home

With over 25 years of experience designing luxury residences in south-east England, LuxDeco’s Interiors Director Linda Holmes knows what it takes to create a stylish city apartment. Which is what makes the luxury interiors destination’s recent collection so spot-on for metropolitan life.

“The Riverside Collection is really the quintessential London look right now,” Linda reveals, “It’s neither too on-trend nor conventional – it’s a timeless, unisex look that everyone can enjoy. That, combined with faultless quality, is really what sophisticated city types want.

I’m excited to share how you can get the look in your own home because, whether in the city or elsewhere, this is a style which can be adapted to your personal tastes and one which will evolve with time.”

THE LIVING ROOM

The Inspirations

“The real purpose the whole collection, but the living room in particular, was to create a relaxing space so we were inspired by comfortable textures, calming palettes and furniture which was suitable for sophisticated tastes but, above all, comfortable!”

“A neutral backdrop is the best place to start. Neutral doesn’t need to be boring – in fact, you can create even more subtly interesting neutral spaces because texture becomes ultra-important. Onto the neutral backdrop, place timeless furniture pieces. For this space we chose a classic asymmetrical parallel arrangement with an L-shaped sofa on one side of the coffee table and two matching armchairs in an accent dusk blue colour on the other side. This makes it feel traditional but not boring and offers plenty of options. Choose upholstery which has been crafted by skilled furniture makers – this will ensure that you’re getting the most well-made and comfortable seating for you.

Layered lighting is another big tip for all rooms but living rooms in particular because it’s used so frequently under many different circumstances. Combining ambient lighting with accent and task lighting will really round out your lighting plan. I love this room’s combination of architectural ceiling lighting with a statement chandelier and some wonderful art lighting.

THE DINING ROOM

Inspirations

“The Riverside Apartment dining room is small but mighty, which is exactly what most London dining rooms are. We wanted to create something which would feel luxurious in the daytime and dramatic in the evenings. For its colour palette, we were inspired by the layered neutral tones of the John-Richard painting in the background.”

“To achieve the Riverside Apartment’s look, we designed a suite of rich high-gloss wenge furniture pieces – a chic dining table, smart contrast fabric chairs and a U-shaped console table. Using pieces which were part of a set allowed the dining area to feel unified and less busy – it was all about sleek, clean lines and finishes. Keeping the furniture selection uncomplicated allows you to easily add interesting patterns too.

Ground the space with an interesting rug like we did – we chose the Kelly Wearstler Tracery Rug for The Rug Company and accessorise with unique glass vases, objet and, of course, a sensational chandelier. This LED crystal shard chandelier is amazing when lit for evening dinner parties but it makes a statement even during the day.”

THE MASTER BEDROOM

The Inspirations

“We wanted something that felt contemporary but not clinical, timeless but not old, and that’s what the Riverside Apartment’s master bedroom is. Everything about it will age gracefully because its foundation is thoughtfully simple with interest added in in other ways.”

“The master bedroom is a space that will age gracefully because we’ve chosen a palette which isn’t too high-contrast – it’s incredibly pleasant for both men and women to enjoy. This would be my top tip for a master bedroom. Both you and your partner want to feel at home there. The dusky blue from the living room is carried through an translates into a serene bedroom vibe.

By way of form, the furniture is fairly minimalist but it’s not stark which is important – there’s lots of texture and warmth to the pieces. I call this style “the new timeless” because it’s on-trend without the risk of dating. I think that’s a great way to achieve style longevity. Since it’s the focal point of the room, choose a headboard which is timeless and won’t date. A well-made headboard upholstered in a beautiful fabric which will wear well (like this one in the master bedroom) is a smart choice and it can be easily reupholstered as fashions and trends change.

And find a beautiful end of bed bench! You will not believe how often you will use it – it can be a real chameleon. The Profile bench from Bernhardt is one we were so excited to use – a brilliant combination of elegant lines and modern simplicity. We recommend mixing metal with wood furniture. It creates an inviting but modern bedroom.”

THE GUEST BEDROOM

Inspirations

“We were inspired by a more mature (and more enduring!) take on the millennial pink trend with a little bit of rethought Art Deco style thrown in for good measure.”

Get the Look

“Your colour might not be pink but find an accent colour which is a little different from the rest of the home for this space – a guest room is where you can step outside your comfort zone. Don’t be scared to use it on larger pieces – it will really make an impact.

Then just layer the whole space with textures and fabrics. We used shagreen on the bedside tables, a lush cashmere throw, a silk wallpaper and a sateen headboard. All different but all wonderfully cohesive. And luxurious! Why not treat your guests?

I always say don’t neglect your guest room. It deserves as much love and design thought as any other room in the house.”
